hello friends, i explained in my previous post that "poetry" as a label is not really important to me, although i do have fun applying the term where it seems exciting or new
i think my recent vlogs can be productively considered as poetry. beyond their focus on language, they also use styles and notably methods of certain strains in contemporary poetry
when i vlog i usually draft material for an hour or more, walking around in my apartment or outdoors recording myself talking. i usually have a loose topic to start with, but in my most recent vlogs, i don't explain anything directly or comprehensively. i'm just riffing off the basic topic with jokes and assertions (improvising poetry i think)
i started vlogging as a more exciting, less comprehensive alternative to my long blog posts. around the time of my vlog on facebook commenting, though, i realized i was most satisfied with my vlogs when i drifted to different topics and didn't pressure myself to really explain things. from there my videos have become even more free and open. i haven't really communicated specific, well-supported ideas in my most recent vlogs at all
these videos might be different from other poetry in certain ways. a text-only transcript wouldn't really capture the work. voice and gesture play a big part in creating the humor and surprise. yet it still feels like language and voice are the main event, as with my simple design template for DOWNLOAD HELVETICA... the main creative work is not really visual, even though there is a visual element
my vlogs are like poems compiled from automatic writing fragments, but the automatic writing is done orally and recorded with a camera instead of a keyboard.. or they're like slam poems that are performed only once, before they're written: improvised slam that i then cut up and form into poems. the revision process includes some new hurdles (it's harder to make small changes to a line, for example), but my same basic method of revision applies: cut out everything except what consistently excites me
thats all today! thank you dominate the web
